Many motorcyclists do not realize that they signed a personal injury protection waiver presented by their insurance company. Kentucky law requires all motorists to have insurance coverage, which usually has a $10,000 personal injury protection (PIP) minimum, but there is an exception in the law for motorcycle coverage. The PIP covers any medical costs and/or lost wages, or a combination thereof, up to the $10,000 coverage limit. The PIP insurance waiver will initially save you some level of insurance costs in lower insurance premiums but most motorcyclists unknowingly have just assumed the risk that they will be responsible for the first $10,000 of medical costs if they are ever involved in an accident. Most, if not all, of my motorcycle injury clients cannot remember signing the waiver until the insurance company presents them with a copy when they deny PIP medical cost payments. So please review your motorcycle insurance coverage to ascertain whether you have PIP coverage and if not, you may want to reconsider whether a PIP waiver is right for you.
